Sony has revealed during its Q2 financial report that PS Plus has lost nearly two million subscribers since the format holder revamped the service into a three-tier model back in June.
This marks the third year in a row that PS Plus has decline in terms of active memberships, with subscribers hitting 45.4 million for the three-month period ended September 30, 2022. This is down from 47.3 million during the period quarters. Meanwhile, monthly active users decline to 102 million, again down from 104 million year-on-year.
Speaking during the earnings call, Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s CFO, pointed the blame at declining third-party game sales and ‘more people going outdoors.’

There have been a declining number of members of PlayStation Plus. However, in the second quarter we renewed our services and there hasn’t been a great momentum as a whole. Also, we didn’t make aggressive promotions during the second quarter.
Therefore, in the future we are going to have more penetration on PS5 and we are going to have very good titles. In addition, we are able to make better promotions and we think we are able to recover.
Elsewhere, Totoki-san touched base on major third-party releases, notably Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which is enjoying “a good release,” and that “for the third quarter we do have very high expectations.”
Sony announced during the same earnings call that the PS5 has now shipped 25 million worldwide.
